Devices are individually-tracked physical assets. Each one has its own record, its own serial number, and its own history.
New devices default to Available.
Available — in the pool, ready to hand out.
Pending — not yet in service.
Assigned — allocated to someone who hasn't collected it yet.
Checked out — in someone's hands.
Archived — retired from service.
Broken — out of service, needs repair.
Most fields can be edited in place — click a value, change it, press Enter. Manufacturer, model, and category can be created inline if they don't exist yet.
Actions available on a device:
Check out and Check in — see Checking assets in and out.
Confirm pickup — moves an Assigned device to Checked out.
Mark broken and Mark repaired — Broken sends a device out of service; Repaired returns it to Available.
Record audit — see Auditing assets.
Add maintenance record.
Assign a component — install RAM, a drive, or another part into this device.
The end-of-life date cannot be set earlier than the purchase date. If you move the purchase date forward on an existing device, its end-of-life date is re-checked against the new purchase date and the edit is rejected if it would now fall before it.
A maintenance record has a type: Repair, Upgrade, Maintenance, Inspection, Cleaning, or Other. Records can be linked to the vendor who did the work.

When your selection mixes assigned and unassigned devices, bulk check-out asks whether to reassign everything to one person or only hand out the unassigned ones.
Every create, update, delete, check-out, check-in, and status change is written to an append-only audit log. The History tab on a device shows that trail — who did what, and when.
After you delete a device, its serial number becomes free for reuse on a new device.
