Categories organize assets into named groups inside each asset type. Common examples are Laptops and Monitors for devices, or Headsets and Keyboards for accessories.
Where to manage
Go to Settings, then Categories. The table shows every category, grouped by type.
You can filter by name and by type. Long lists are paginated.
Managing categories requires permission to manage categories. See Roles and permissions for who has it by default.
Create and rename
Add a category by choosing Add and entering a name and type.
Names are trimmed and required. The maximum length is 255 characters.
Names are unique within a type, case-insensitively. For example, Laptops and laptops cannot both exist as device categories.
You can rename a single category at any time. The type cannot be changed after creation.
Delete
Categories can be deleted only when unused. If any asset or model references a category, it cannot be deleted. The table shows counts to help you find safe deletions.
Deletes are soft. The record is hidden with a deletion timestamp.
Bulk delete validates every selected category first. If any are in use, nothing is deleted.
Apply a template
To start with a sensible set of names, apply a category template. This creates only categories, nothing else.
Applying a template skips any names you already have, case-insensitively.
You need permission to manage categories to apply a template.
Limits and rules
Create up to 500 categories in one bulk action.
Delete up to 100 categories in one bulk action.
Bulk updates cannot change names.
Custom properties, organization, and other managed fields cannot be set directly from the category editor.
